Aston Villa v Newcastle – Villa Park at 17:30 live on Sky Sports 1
After landing my last 4 Asian Handicap betting picks, I am hoping to make it 5 in a row on Saturday.
It still may sound like a Premier League clash, but this weekend Aston Villa take on Newcastle in the Championship, one of the biggest games of the Football League season.

Aston Villa haven’t had the best of starts to life in the Championship! After finishing rock bottom of the Premier League table last campaign, you’d think it could only get better for Villa fans this season.
Even under new manager Roberto Di Matteo, Villa still seem to be struggling. Out of the 8 league games Villa have played so far, they’ve only won 1, lost 2 and have drawn the rest.
This has come as a surprise to many who thought Aston Villa would be right up there challenging for promotion alongside opponents Newcastle before the season started. It’s still early days however and as we’ve seen time and time again, fortunes can change.
Aston Villa’s defeats have come against Sheffield Wednesday (1-0) and Bristol City (3-1), with their only victory being a 3-0 win over Rotherham, whereby Rudy Gestede scored a brace and Jack Grealish sealed the win.
Jack Grealish has once again hit the press in a negative light this week however, as he is thought to have been fined £50,000 by the club for his latest off-field indiscretion which involved an all-night party.
Gestede is currently Villa’s top-scorer with 3 goals to his name, but his side’s current draw rate must be a big concern. Villa need to start winning games as their run of poor form has seen them drop down to 18th in the Championship table.
Although there is a long way to go, opponents Newcastle are already 7 points ahead!
Last weekend Villa’s game away at Ipswich ended in another draw (0-0) and Di Matteo will be hoping to break this trend on Saturday, although you don’t get tougher opponents than Newcastle United.
Newcastle had a rocky start to the new season, losing their 1st 2 games to Fulham (1-0) and Huddersfield (2-1). A run of 5 consecutive league victories since then saw them shoot up the Championship table, although last weekend their winning streak came to an end with a 2-0 defeat to Wolves.
Wins against Derby (2-0), Brighton (2-0) and QPR (6-0) would have encouraged the team, especially the 6-0 thrashing of QPR! Newcastle are banging in the goals at the moment and Dwight Gayle who signed from Crystal Palace in the summer is currently Newcastle’s top-scorer, with 4 goals to his name.
Last Tuesday Newcastle faced Wolves for the second time in the space of a week, although this time it was in the EFL Cup and the result was very different. The Geordies got their own back, knocking Wolves out the League Cup by 2 goals to nil, courtesy of goals scored by Matt Ritchie and Gouffran.
Newcastle have only conceded 6 league goals this season and so Aston Villa might have their work cut out on Saturday in regards to breaking the deadlock.
Although Newcastle lost to Wolves last weekend, they have looked impressive in the weeks prior. Rafa Benitez’s side have been scoring goals both at home and away this season and I am backing them to get on the score-sheet again at Villa Park. Aston Villa are struggling and as they aren’t in the greatest of form, I recommend backing Newcastle -0.25 on the Asian Handicap betting market, which looks great value. The Magpies are winners for me on Saturday!
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Newcastle -0.25 @ 2.17 with Pinnacle
