NFL Playoffs 2020: Beginning the New Era of Quarterbacks

Super Bowl LIV will happen on February 2, 2020, at the Hard Rock Stadium.

But, before every NFL fan, flock to Miami Gardens, Florida, let us remind you that what we see today is the dawn of the new era of quarterbacks.

The majority of the QBs of all eight NFL teams in the playoffs hasn’t appeared in a Super Bowl.

Russell Wilson of Seattle Seahawks played in Super Bowl XLVIII.

Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers was the Super Bowl XLV MVP (Most Valuable Player). Rodgers was also NFL MVP in 2011 and 2014.

Jimmy Garappolo of San Francisco 49ers played twice in the Super Bowl (XLIX and LI).

Here are the QBs who could be taking home a Super Bowl ring this year.

Kirk Cousins (Minnesota Vikings)

Cousins was drafted in 2012 and appeared in the Pro Bowl in 2016. It was the same year when he threw 458 passing yards, his career-high. Cousins finished the last season with 3,602 passing yards and 26 touchdowns.

Sean Mannion (Minnesota Vikings)

Mannion was drafted in 2015 and played for the Los Angeles Rams from 2015 to 2018. In 2019, he signed with the Vikings. Mannion is a starter QB.

Deshaun Watson (Houston Texans)

Watson is out to prove his worth, which is what he was doing exactly since 2017. ESPN 300 ranked him as the No. 1 quarterback recruit of 2014. In 2018 and 2019, Watson appeared in the Pro Bowl.

A.J. McCarron (Houston Texans)

McCarron was also a starter QB who had his first start in week 17. During the game, he threw 225 yards, 39 rushing yards, and had a touchdown.

Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs)

Mahomes, who was drafted in 2017, is also included in the 2018 and 2019 Pro Bowl. He was NFL MVP in 2018 as well.

Matt Moore (Kansas City Chiefs)

Moore was undrafted but went to play with Carolina Panthers in 2007. He became a starter when Chad Henne, the backup QB of the Chiefs, got injured. He also took over when Mahones had a knee injury.

Marcus Mariota (Tennessee Titans)

Mariota was drafted in 2015. He has the record for the first player to have a passing and receiving TD in an NFL playoff game. Mariota is also the first player who has a perfect passing rating as a starter.

Ryan Tannehill (Tennessee Titans)

Tannehill was drafted in 2012 but was traded to the Titans in 2019. He was a replacement to Mariota in Week 6 and became a starter in Week 7. Tannehill set the franchise-record due to his 9.6 yards per attempt and 117.5 QB rating.

Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens)

Drafted in 2018, Jackson is the youngest QB to start a playoff game at only 23 years. He also holds the record for the most rushing yards by a QB (within a season). He appeared in the 2019 Pro Bowl. Jackson led the TD passes in 2019 with 36.

Robert Griffin III (Baltimore Ravens)

Griffin III drafted and appeared in Pro Bowl 2012. He was currently the backup QB of the Ravens, backing Joe Flacco and Jackson.

Things to Know About the 2019 NFL Man of the Year Award

The NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award is one of the most prestigious awards in the league.

What is the Man of the Year Award?

Established in 1970, the award aims to recognize an NFL player who displayed outstanding service to his respective community, aside from his on-field excellence.

Each team nominates one football player who had a significant positive impact on the community.

Who is Walter Payton?

Although the award is already in its 50th year, it was renamed after Walter Payton in 1999. Payton was a Hall of Famer running back for Chicago Bears.

Mike Ditka described him as one of the greatest football players but even greater as a human being.

His legacy lies in leaving a lasting impact when it comes to organ donations. Payton himself, and subsequently his charity, called for greater awareness about its importance, at the national level.

Payton also spearheaded toy donation drives when he was still alive. The collected toys are donated to various institutions housing underprivileged children in Chicago on Christmas day.

Chicago Tribune named him the greatest Bears of all time.

Who selects the Man of the Year awardee?

A special committee composed of the NFL Commissioner, the last year’s winner (who will be Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long), and former football players who have also won the said award.

There could only be one winner.

Did Drew Brees win the Walter Payton Award?

Yes, Brees did win the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2006.

Brees was one of the six active football players who have won the award. The others are Jason Witten (2012), Thomas Davis (2014), Larry Fitzgerald (2016), Eli Manning (2016), and J.J. Watt (2017).

What patch is on Drew Brees and Eli Manning’s jersey?

The patch, which is a trophy silhouette, was introduced in 2017, and Brees was the first to play wearing the new jersey design.

Past winners who are still actively playing continue to wear jerseys with the Man of the Year patch. This is to recognize their contributions to the league and their respective communities.

In 2019, it will be different because all the nominees wear a helmet with the Man of the Year decal. They will wear it from Week 15 onwards until the season ends. This is to recognize their on and off-field accomplishments.

What is the WPMOY Challenge?

NFL’s partner, Nationwide, has a separate Charity Challenge, which is now on its fifth year. It is a Twitter campaign that allows fans to support and promote the nominees.

The #WPMOYChallenge should be used, followed by the last name of the chosen nominee. The player with the most number of tweets from December 12 to January 12 will win.

The three winners will receive $25,000, $10,000, and $5,000 donations for their chosen charities.

Based on the leaderboard found in the NFL’s website, the top five contenders of the Charity Challenge are:

  1. Kyle Rudolph (Minnesota Vikings TE)
  2. Bobby Wagner (Seattle Seahawks LB)
  3. Kyle Van Noy (New England Patriots DL)
  4. Nick Sundberg (Washington Redskins LS)
  5. Cam Newton (Carolina Panthers QB)
