NBA Cares: 3 of the Most Passionate Campaigns of 2019

on

Throughout 2019, NBA Cares launches various campaigns to support certain causes and advocacies.

As the association’s global corporate social responsibility program, NBA Cares commits itself to address important social issues in the US and the rest of the world. NBA Cares has already provided 323 places in 40 countries where children and their families can live, play, and learn.

Here are the most passionate campaigns that the NBA community engaged.

1) The Chamique Holdsclaw documentary

The one-hour documentary is a The Jed Foundation-assisted case study created with Rick Goldsmith. It was entitled Mind/Game: The Unquiet Journey of Chamique Holdsclaw.

Holdsclaw is a former WNBA player who suffered from a mental illness. She initially retired on June 11, 20017 playing for Los Angeles Sparks. She came back playing in 2009, this time with Atlanta Dream.

Prior to the documentary, Holdsclaw wrote an autobiography outlining her bouts against depression throughout her career. She also attempted suicide at one point.

Her documentary aired on May 3, 2016, on Logo TV.

The renewed interest in her story springs from her actions to become an advocate of mental illness. Holdsclaw shares her story with others especially her experiences as a bipolar.

2) The NBA All-Star 2019

In February 2019, the NBA All-Star players and their families partake in various activities targeted at the local community organizations. Such organizations work with thousands of people in need across the Charlotte area.

The grassroots events and programs used the game of basketball in bringing together people and empowering the families particularly their children. Among the activities include hands-on service projects, clinics and games, forums, and wellness events.

The goal of these activities is to teach children the values and fundamentals of basketball; create spaces for open, honest, and transparent dialogue; and build support systems as well as mentorship opportunities.

Ultimately, the NBA All-Star games were represented by Team LeBron and Team Giannis. The first team selected Right Moves for Youth while the second team chose the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.

Representatives of both organizations attended the practice and given special in-arena experiences. The winning team won $350,000 donations while the losing team, $150,000 donations. Through these donations, the organizations are provided with financial resources as support in uplifting their own communities.

3) The Hurricane Dorian Relief efforts

Hurricane Dorian struck the Caribbean, Bahamas, mainland US, and Atlantic Canada. It was dubbed as the worst natural disaster in these areas. The damages were identified at $4.68 billion in total.

In the US, the greatest damages were realized in Puerto Rico, Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Massachusetts, and Maine. The total damages in the areas totalled $1.2 billion.

The entire NBA family, which includes the NBA, WNBA, and NBA 2K League, worked together in supporting the communities with necessary and immediate relief efforts.

It was a joint effort with various organizations and of course, the teams, players, and fandoms for donation drives.

American Red Cross, DirectRelief, Unicef USA, All Hands and Hearts Smart Response, Bahamas Relief Foundation, and World Central Kitchen are key organizations that participated in nba4dorian campaign.
