Last year, the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France smashed attendance and viewership records and proved once again that men’s football should not overshadow women’s football. The competition has become fiercer, stronger and more global than ever as various female players who top women’s football rankings dominate the field to be recognised as part of the best.

The last couple of years have become a turning point for women football players. With the outstanding success of the 2019 World cup, it has given most women’s professional football leagues hope that their place in the sport is given the recognition and attention that it deserves. With women’s tenacity and their great spirit of sportsmanship, they belong in any field, court or stadium.

To prove this point, here are the top players in women’s football rankings who you should watch out for this year:

1.Megan Rapinoe (USA)

Megan Rapinoe was named the Best FIFA women’s football player of 2019, which is why she is definitely part of this list. She plays for Reign FC in the U.S. National Women’s Soccer League as a midfielder and winger. She is also a gold Olympic medalist, a two-time World Cup champion and winner of the Ballon d’Or Féminin. Rapinoe has gained immense popularity because of her fantastic play in the last World Cup. She scored the opening goal in the 2-0 match. Because Rapinoe also scored six goals in the championship, she gained the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball. As one of those who are high on the women’s football rankings, she is someone that you should keep watch of for the 2023 World Cup.

2.Alex Morgan (USA)

She is considered one of the richest and best female football players because of her marvellous goals during the Olympic Games and the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Morgan plays for the Orlando Pride of the National Women’s Soccer League. She is also in the U.S. women’s national football team alongside Rapinoe as the forward. Back in 2009, she was the youngest member of the women’s national team, and now she is one of their top players. During the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, she also played a crucial role in the win of the U.S. against Japan. And just last year at the FIFA World Cup, she set the tone with a record-tying five goals that helped the team win over Thailand with 13-0 during the opening match. This striker is surely a player you’ll want for your team.

3.Christine Sinclair (Canada)

Sinclair is also one of the women football players who have shown their capabilities last year. She is considered as the most successful player in Canada. At 16 years old, she made her debut with the senior national team in the 2000 Algarve Cup and scored her first international goal. Last year, she was in the number one spot among active players in the women’s football rankings with her 182 career international goals. For straight 11 times, she was named Canada Soccer’s Women Player of the Year from 2004 to 2014, and she also is a multiple-time nominee for the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year. This veteran Portland Thorns player is no doubt, one of the best female football players in the world.

4.Ada Hegerberg (Norway)

Norwegian prodigy, Hegerberg will go down in history as the first-ever winner of the Ballon d’Or Feminin Ballon d’Or in 2018. She is one of the most prolific strikers of her generation. She started her career at the age of 16 at Sunndal, and by the age of 26, she scored 26 goals in 22 league games and led her current team Olympique Lyonnais or Lyon for short to their nine consecutive Division I title.

In 2016, Hegerberg won the UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe and in 2017 the BBC Women’s Footballer award. It has been two years since she has played. This is because she chose not to play for her national team until she saw more progress toward equal working conditions and overall support for the women’s program. We are hoping to see this strong female football player back in the field again because she is still one of the best players out there.
