Novak Djokovic won 6-3 6-2 6-4 in his first career meeting with Pablo Cuevas in the French Open. The top seed player produced a focused performance, which helped him win and reach the third round for a sixteenth consecutive year. He will be facing Lithuanian player Ricardas Berankis, who is ranked 93rd in the world in the last 32.

A Brief Recap of the Game

The game was not easy for Novak Djokovic as Cuevas showed flashes of resistance. But, the Serbian player raised his game when needed. He broke Cuevas’ serve a second time to go up 5-3 in the opening set, although he found himself 0-4 down on his own serve. However, Djokovic then grabbed the next five points to seal the lead.

Cuevas had difficulty as the top seed player broke his serve two times to canter through the second set. He also broke his serve early on in the third set and momentarily lost his concentration in the fourth game when he became angry at a heckler. But, he was able to gain control ultimately. Eventually, Djokovic sealed the victory on his first match point.

Novak Djokovic Put on a Clinical Display

The 18-time Grand Slam champion is aiming for a second title in Paris. If he does lift the Coupe des Mousquetaires, he will close the gap on Nadal and Federer when it comes to Grand Slam victories. Novak Djokovic also won the Belgrade Open last week and, in Rome, a run to the title round at the ATP Masters 1000 event.

He has not lost a set yet and stayed firm in defeating clay-court specialist Cuevas. Cuevas has won all of his 6 Tour-level titles on clay.

The 2016 champion told the reporters, “Yes, I’m playing well, feeling great. I’m ready to go deep in this tournament.

“Hopefully, that’s gonna be the case, but I’ll take it match by match, and so far, the two matches that I have played have been played on a high quality.

“I’m pleased with the performance today, particularly against I think a very good player, specialist on clay, someone I have never faced before, has got a lot of spin.”

Djokovic Rages at Heckler

The top seed player needed all of his patience because he played against an opponent with some superb shots and the ability to keep rallies alive. He needed to maintain his composure. But, he almost lost his cool when he paused before a serve because a fan was heckling him from the right side of his service court. This was during his two sets up and 2-1 up with a break in the third.

The umpire issued a warning to the crowd to stay silent, but it was not enough for Novak Djokovic, who complained to the umpire.

“Every single-serve, it’s the game guy!” He stated as he pointed out the heckler in the stands at Court Suzanne Lenglen.
